Natural stone pavers for pathways are a unique yet smart way to link your home with its surroundings. Whether in the form of zigzag pavements or stepping stones in the garden, or a straight walkway leading to the front door of your house from the main entrance, natural stone pavers are a great value addition to your property.

Pathways are usually created with flagstones – a common term for any type of natural stone that can be broken down into irregular, square or circular pieces; depending on the requirement. pathways, paving stone or flagstone can be made out of limestone, sandstone or quartzite. Its size may vary from 1-2 feet and the height is generally kept 3/4th of an inch to 3 inches. As per the choice of the natural stone and finish, flagstones can be obtained in different color combinations, shades, and textures.

An Array of Shapes and Colors to Choose From:

Every natural stone occurs in multiple shades and design patterns. Further, these stones can be given any desired shape as per the need of the project. Limestone is generally greyish in appearance but also exists in many other shades like blue, brown, green, yellow, and pink. Similarly, the popular colors of sandstone are brown, black, red, gold, green, red, and pink.

Quartzite also occurs in several eye-pleasing shades like golden, black, green, silver, red, and yellow. It also contains some tiny particles that have a tendency to sparkle; thus impart a unique look to the quartzite or other natural stone pavers.

The climate of your area is an important factor that should be considered while choosing a stone for pathways. In case you are residing in an area, where the winter temperature generally reaches the freezing point, it is suggested to go for a dense stone like quartzite as it has the ability to withstand extreme cold. On the other hand, limestone and sandstone are highly porous (except a few variants) and easily absorb moisture. This makes them susceptible to get cracked upon freezing; hence not suitable for cold regions.

The installation and other key factors to remember:

There are numerous ways to install natural stone in the outdoors. It could either used to fashion a pathway leading to your front door or as a decorative article like fountains in the front yard or garden. A stone also looks great when bordered around a planting bed.

Natural stone pavers can be laid to form either a straight or S-shaped pathway. To make it more appealing, one can narrow or widen the path lengthwise at specific distances to create a zigzag pattern. If you want to play creative, you can come up with designs of your own, such as starburst or nautilus shape flagstone surrounding a circular stone.

A 30 to 36 inch-wide pathway is considered ideal for a single person to walk, whereas a pathway with a width of nearly 48 inches is suitable for two persons to walk comfortably side by side.

Laying the Flagstones:

After the selection of stone and design, the next step is to develop the bed for the stone. Initially, a four to six-inch deep ditch should be dug using a shovel or sod cutter. If the design is somewhat complex, it is suggested to define the path using stakes and then filling in the boundary upside down using spray paint.

In the freshly dug bed, lay a base of crushed rock containing stone dust. Experts suggest that the base should be kept in a way so that it gives a generous amount of powder to compact and make the stone to stick well at their place. The bed should be filled up to 2 inches, so that the flagstone of varying heights could be lowered and raised accordingly to make the top surface flat and uniform. Thereafter, the base is packed downwards or made wet so that it gets compact.

Setting the Flagstones:

After laying the bed, it is time to select the stone with the desired color and finish. The selected stone is then set in the bed by adjusting each of them to create an even and flat surface. For high-traffic areas like the pathway leading to the home, it is recommended to use a level gauge. The space between the stones should be kept ½ inch to 4 inches depending on the effect you want to create. A few people can also be found using a diamond blade skill saw to cut the stone and pack them tightly together without leaving any gap.

You can also use commercially available polymeric sand to fill in the gaps between stones to bind the base material. As a precautionary measure, you can also use aluminum or plastic paver restraint, known as paver edging, to keep the stone at its place.

Once the flagstones are set, the newly developed pathway can last a lifetime. To ensure this, all you need is to clean and maintain it at regular intervals. A good looking pathway not just adds value to the property, but also proves to be a great investment in the long run.

Kishangarh, Rajasthan, India.

India possesses a wide spectrum of dimensional stones that include granite, marble, sandstone, limestone, slate, and quartzite, spread out all over the country. India is also amongst the largest producer of raw stone material and the sectors are quite developed and vibrant in the South, as well as in Rajasthan and Gujarat, with a dedicated resource of entrepreneurs. India also has an indigenous resource of machinery and tool manufacturers that cater well to the demands of this sector.

The Indian stone industry has evolved into the production and manufacturing of blocks, flooring slabs, structural slabs, calibrated – ready to fix tiles, monuments, tombstones, sculptures, artifacts, cobbles, cubes, curbs, pebbles, and landscape garden stones.

Tradition of stones

India’s history, dating back to 3200 BC has been influenced considerably by the disposition, development, and use of stones and other construction materials. Dimension stones have also left deep imprints on the architectural heritage of the country. Innumerable temples, forts, and palaces of Ancient Indian Civilization have been carved out of locally available stones. The Taj Mahal at Agra was constructed from Indian marble. Some of the rock-cut structures include Khajuraho Temple, Elephanta Caves, and Konark Temple. Besides, all major archeological excavations have revealed exquisitely carved statuettes and carvings in stone. Ancient Buddhist monuments like the Sanchi Stupa of 3rd century BC have also been carved out of stone.

This tradition of Stone Architecture has continued to the present era, with most of the important modern buildings in India like the Presidential House, Parliament House, and Supreme Court made from high-quality sandstone of Rajasthan. The Baha’i House of Worship of New Delhi stands testimony to the relevance of marble in modern Indian architecture.

Stones are still the mainstays of civil construction in India, with stones being used extensively in public buildings, hotels, and temples. It is increasingly being used in homes, with the use of stones now penetrating amongst the growing middle class of India.

The success of the commercial stone industry solely depends upon defects in rock/stone. Natural defects in ornamental/commercial rock deposits adversely affect the quality of rock deposits. Detection of natural defects in the decorative and dimensional stone industry plays a vital role in the quality assessment.

India is a pioneer in the exploration, mining of commercial rock deposits and in establishing a firm base for the stone industry. India, with an estimated resource of about 1,690 million cum, comprising over 160 shades of Dimension Stone Granites (DSG), accounts for about 205 of the world resources. Of the 300 varieties being traded in the world market, nearly half of them are from India. Commercially viable granite and other rock deposits are reported from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and others.

trends in natural stone, then look no further. To save you time thumbing through a bundle of home decorating magazines, keep reading for some natural stone trends that are hot right now.

 Outdoors In

Natural stone makes for a wonderfully tactile surface. So, bring a sense of the outside into your home using natural stone. Rather than solely using natural stone as a flooring option, look upwards and utilize this excellent material for a feature wall. Using natural materials for your interiors will transform them from ordinary to extraordinary. Natural materials can create a sense of calm and restore the balance between nature and technology.

Beautiful White

Let’s face it, when you’re at home, relaxation is key. Take a cue from nature and think of white skies to inspire your design palette. Shades of white are popular right now because it can evoke instant calm, so embrace the moodiness of this color throughout your home. Consider marble tiles white to keep your look fresh and current. Or go for an ancient granite-like Porphyry pronounced which has been used as a paving stone for centuries. This volcanic rock favored by the Romans has a broad range of applications, from paving, cladding, and even for your fireplace surround.

Nature Inspire

With this trend, you will see nature taking charge of the palette to inspire both your interiors and exteriors. Earthy tones are serene and will help you wind down. Use hardworking materials like the stunning Pavian limestone pavers which come in very light colors and will tie in seamlessly with any style.

The green trend is set to continue because being environmentally sustainable just makes sense. Sustainability can ensure that future generations enjoy the things that we have enjoyed. Reconnecting with the natural world doesn’t have to come at the expense of the environment. Choose from high-quality materials that are ethically purchased as well as being responsibly manufactured. Natural stone offers many benefits, but you can count on these products being hardwearing and will last a lifetime with minimal

Whatever you’re planning a complete your home, villa, hotel, hospital, or project details can go a long way in projects. The varied options within the natural stone can elevate any home.

The intense movement of more highly veined Statuario materials is trending in natural stone today.

One way homeowners can add warmth and a sense of calm in their home is by bringing in organic materials such as natural stone. While natural stone has been used throughout the home for centuries, experts agree that homeowners today are mindful of how they use the materials and are showing off its true beauty.

Natural stone’s millennia-long popularity has not flagged one bit, and D.C.Bhandari  founder and Chairman of Bhandari marble group, is seeing a movement towards more highly veined materials Statuario and colorful Granite for Countertops natural stone. That’s not to say it’s all about color all the time. “White and grey will likely remain popular for several more years, but more adventurous designers and homeowners are beginning to embrace striking natural stones whose intense movement and dramatic colors make a statement out of a surface,” he said.

Ornate and colorful backsplashes are making bold statements including backsplashes going up the entire wall behind stoves and above countertops.

Incorporating natural stone as a backsplash is one easy way to update and create a bold look in a home. The spaces that resonate with us and have an impact are most often created from natural stone, said Bhandari. “Manufactured products…do not offer the intrinsic warmth or authority of natural products.”

When it comes to home trends,

Mr. Rahul CEO

Bhandari marble group points out the mixing of materials, including natural stones:  types of stone for home, or a villa island that is different from the perimeter Floorings, Elevation, and decoration.

Where home, villa hotel hospital, and project have been dominated by white over the past several years, Bhandari is delighted to see color finally making a comeback. “We’re seeing more ornate and colorful backsplashes, and in a continuing trend, those backsplashes are now going up the entire wall behind stoves and above countertops,” he said. “Where designers once created smaller decorative panels, now they’re using more decorative elements on the entire backsplash, and turning backsplashes into feature walls that envelop hoods, surround cabinets, and reach up to the ceiling.”

Less-polished stone finishes such as dark granites with leathered finishes are embraced in kitchens and disguise fingerprints and watermarks, said Mr. Rahul.

Bhandari notes the use of waterfall slabs for countertops and islands, and a move toward the modern minimal look of slabs flowing from countertops up onto backsplashes, waterfalled at the countertop edge so they run from ceiling to floor, with vein-matching or book-matching across each component.

We are noticing homeowners choosing different kinds of textures to add interest in their home, villa, hotel, hospital, and project. he observes that clients are choosing less high-polished materials in favor of leathered and suede finishes, which he calls casual and sophisticated, noting that these finishes also disguise fingerprints and watermarks. he’s seeing natural stone being used in unique ways that take advantage of its durability as a material. His clients love Marble, Granite & quartzites with elegant veining, as well as dark granites in a leathered finish.

Marble & Quartzites with elegant veining are contemporary favorites in natural stone.

Natural stone is a great way to create a statement piece. “Choose a colorful slab as the centerpiece and decorate around it,” recommended Mr. Rahul. “Go for monotone or high-contrast themes. Other options include adding light under your cabinets to highlight your backsplash, and book-match or vein-match whenever you can.”

A home, villa hotel hospital, and project needs a design element that creates a focal point, according to Mr. Rahul. he and his team then carefully pair that focal point with other materials that won’t compete with the core piece. Neutralizing some elements – so there are layers of interest – is key.

“Updating your backsplash or countertop will make a huge difference in your kitchen’s aesthetic,” said Mr. Rahul, who updates his own backsplash once every 15-20 years. “If you choose timeless materials, you shouldn’t need to update it any more frequently than that. If you need a complete overhaul, dig in, and do it!”

Bathroom Trends

Choose a colorful slab and decorate around it, advised Granite by Mr. Rahul.

He is noticing his clients are focusing on one special material in the space and pairing it with materials that complement its unique character. For a recent project, he and his client chose a unique marble that they cut in large pieces and installed in a herringbone pattern. It’s a classic design, but blown up in scale.

Today’s homeowners are making a greater commitment to bold bathrooms that are making a statement and leaving behind the sparse and monolithic look of recent years. Whether it’s full-height wall Marble installations, patterns on floors or walls, or selecting warmer and richer natural materials in general, bathrooms are not as cold as they’ve been in the past. The variety of natural stone options and applications are helping to shape this trend.

Used in palaces and temples in the ancient times as supporting material, granite carries its own story of evolution. The invention of modern tools has made it possible to increase its aesthetic value. Its structure can undoubtedly transform any house or property into a mesmerizing piece of art.

Forms of Indian granite:

Indian granite comes in various forms such as mini gang saw slab size, big gang saw slabs size, calibrated and beveled tiles, cutter size granite slabs or half granite slabs, cut to size tiles, worktops, vanity tops, and countertops. Traditionally used as smooth and polished surfaces, Indian granite is now used in the honed and flamed form to keep up with the current trend.

Specifications of Indian granite:

The qualities of raw Indian granite, such as tensile and compressive strength, p-wave velocity, and density, make it a viable option to be used for various purposes. Once polished, it is expected to have a uniform color, texture, size, granularity, water absorption, moisture content, porosity, and hardness.

Because of its non-denting and superior wear resistance qualities, granite is used in various meteorological instruments. Indian granite is harder than marble and usually has colored grains that are swirled and spattered all over its surface. It can be polished, flamed, honed, bush-hammered and split-faced to transform it into the form needed. Granite can also be used in the crushed form which is utilized as the joint in road making, ground, railroad ballast, and as a base product at building sites.

Applications of Indian granite:

Among all the granites, Indian granite is the most sought after around the globe due to its hardness and of course, its beauty. Granite Manufacturers in India and the techniques incorporated in polishing this natural treasure makes it very desirable.  discuss the various stone trends they are finding in the residential market

Kitchen design trends / natural / stone and tile trends/stone fabricators /

Is Granite still rising in popularity? Are miters still a favorite? Is natural stone being used anywhere else but countertops? Over the years, trends seemed to somewhat stagnate. But as the price tag on quartzite drops and homeowners are opting to do more in their houses than ever before, some new design trends are becoming apparent. Stone World had the opportunity to speak with two fabricators from different parts of the country to learn more about current trends in residential design, and what’s on the horizon for the coming year.

“A couple of years ago, the quartz market took over because, I believe, of their aggressive marketing,” said Mr. Rahul “I am now seeing more natural stone on my end and the reason I specify ‘on my end’ is that I have been doing a lot of multi-family units like affordable condos and apartments and I am seeing some of the old classic granites becoming popular again. You can also get more out of a granite slab than a Marble slab. When it comes to regular homeowners, it seems that they are still choosing Granite more often because they believe it is more durable.

We are seeing a rise in quartzites getting cut though Carrara marble is still a classic. We’re still cutting a lot of that. I see the classic granites being specked for larger projects. I can give bulk pricing on those classic granites because of the price I purchase them.”

We have also noticed an increase in the use of quartzites. “I am seeing a continuing trend and interest in quartzite and also items being brought in under quartzite names,” he said. “We have been working with us. We cut some material and send it her way so he can tell us the properties of the stone and let us know if it’s quartzite or a dolomitic marble being sold as a quartzite. As Granite prices have gone up recently, we have definitely seen a demand in quartzites.”

When it comes to countertop edges, Ontra Stone Concepts has been receiving many simple edge requests. “It’s been a lot of eased edges — simple stuff,” said Mr. Rahul. “We do very little ogees or double ogees anymore. We do a lot of miters and we have slowly been seeing thicker miter perimeters asked for by our customers.”

We have also been seeing a lot of mitered edges. “Mitering and waterfall ends are extremely popular here,” said Mr. Rahul. “To the same end, a lot of designers have been trying to have the waterfall miter be the structure that supports the overhangs. I will give them a little bit of a break. I tell them, ‘You can do it a little, but it doesn’t replace the need for adequate support for overhangs.’ If you’re going to be doing more overhangs or waterfall miters, I highly recommend educating yourself and joining a group like the Stone Fabricators so that you don’t need to know all the answers. You can go somewhere and easily get the answer.”

Mitering and waterfall edges on countertops aren’t the only thing that Scott has been observing more of in residential designs. “We are seeing more full-height backsplashes,” he said. “We are seeing full-height for mitered returns in window sills. There seems to be more and more going on with metering, and it’s finding its way into other parts of the job.”

Another opportunity for natural stone

Recently, natural stone has been used even more on fireplaces compared to years past. “Fireplace wraps in natural stone have always been popular,” said Scott. “But now what we are seeing is even more floor-to-ceiling fireplace stonework. We have a project that is 22 feet tall and 13 feet wide across the base. But we are definitely seeing more floor-to-ceiling fireplaces and it’s a great upsell. It’s not a lot of square feet usually — most of the houses can use it if they are putting in a firebox of some sort. Definitely something for fabricators to keep an eye on.”

Bhandari is also seeing more floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces on some of his projects as well. “Some of the bigger fireplace projects that I am doing are about 16 feet tall and made out of natural stone,” said Mr. Rahul. “That’s probably our most extravagant, but others are 8 feet tall. It is something that is being done on our higher-end homes, but these homeowners are wanting it more and more to make a focal point in the home.”
